PlayStation 4 – What You Need to Know

Official word from the manufacturers is that the PlayStation 4 will only feature in UK,US and Canada stores this year. The official release date is said to be 13th of November this year.


CPU -This is also known as the central processing unit. The ps4 has an AMD X86 based 8 core CPU. The PS4 will be powered by a jaguar single chip processor. The estimated number of threads per core is 8/8. The CPU is estimated to run at a frequency of about 1 6GHZ. Another unique feature of the CPU is its Ievel2 (L2) cache of 2x2MB. Its overall processing size is around 28nm.

GPU – This is also known as the graphic processing unit or visual processing unit. The GPU is based on the AMD Radeon based graphic engine. Its shraders throughput is about 1.84 flops. The cores found in the GPU are approximately 1152.

MEMORY – The PS4 runs on an 8GB GDDR5 memory which ensures maximum throughput. This memory can run at a frequency of almost 5500MHZ, which makes the machine very efficient. It has a system memory bus of 256-bits and a system memory bandwidth of around 17.6BB/S.

STORAGE – The machine has a hard disk drive with an internal space of 500GB. This disk however, is removable so that people who wish to upgrade the memory to bigger storage capacities can achieve this.

EXTERNAL DIMENSIONS – The PlayStation 4 is approximately 275mm x 53mm x 305 mm and weighs approximately 2.8kgs.

BD/DVD DRIVE – The system has a read only BD x6 CAV and DVD x8 CAV drive. This can read a variety of disks.

I/O (INPUT/OUTPUT) – The system has a super speed USB3.0 port x2 and an AUX port x1. The system can also be networked through the Ethernet x1, IEEE 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR). Networking plays a primary role as it allows multiple players to compete in a local area network (LAN).

AV OUTPUT – The system has a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI). The HDMI helps to transfer both uncompressed video and data from the machine to the monitor. The system also has DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port.


Other accessories bundled with the PS4 may include wireless joysticks, mono headsets x1, usb cable x1, HDMI cable x1, one AC power cord to get power from an AC source, Other special features of the ps4 are the WiFi that enables one to connect to the internet via wireless means. This is especially important to people who enjoy playing games online. The Sony company has retained its black color and has given the system a product code of CUH-1000A series. The PS4 is truly the next generation gaming tool.
